Mock Pictures

I think that my mock pictures are decent. I feel that from taking them, i’ve learnt a lot. I’ve realised that first of all, different looks are hard to get. I’ve tried to aim and get a ‘we know we’re the next big thing’ look, however you need your actors to be very self confident, and perhaps I may need to really encourage some of my band to have this confidence. I’ve also found the shots that I believe I’ll use for my front cover and my double page spread. I’ll go with the midshot for my front cover, and then for my double page spread I’ll have a full length picture. I may also have a few of just one of the band members for my contents or double page spread. I believe I will also have a full length picture as the image slightly above this text in my double page spread. I will also be having a lot more pictures, with varying outfits, and they will only be in jeans and tee shirts, however it was far too cold outside today for that!

I feel that this was my best picture, and I would look to be using something such as this for my front cover. I quite like the brick backround, and i'll be looking to be getting full eye contact from all band members.

Front Covers

After doing my mock ups, i've been thinking a lot about how I want my three band members to pose for the front cover. Here's a few front covers that I like the look of the band postioning.

After having a look at all of these I think i've decided on how I roughly  want my band to pose. If you look at a one of these covers, the Foals one, you can see that they've just taken the lead singer out of the band, Yannis, and have him alone on the front cover. I prefer having all of the band in the picture as I believe it gives a sense of togetherness. Despite liking the idea of the band holding a guitar or another instrument, I feel that for my magazine i'd prefer it if the band were just posing without any instruments with them.

After going over my article with my teacher, i've made a few spelling changes and edited how it's going to be layed out..

Double Page Spread Mock Ups

After playing around with this front cover, a lot, I finally finished with this. I really like the idea of the picture being at the top, and I like the big letter to start the article off. I also believe that this picture works well with the font style, and colour[s].

Once again, this double page spead took me a while to play around with. I decided in the end to have the 3 coloumns and I do feel that it has been a change for the better. I think the pictures fit nicely into the article and I like the one main picture on the right.

This was probably my best double page spead. I felt that although it was very simple, it worked very well. I really like the idea of having the left hand page covered by one main picture, and I like the idea of having the one, or maybe even two smaller pictures incorporated into the article. I was pleased with the font colours, sizes, and type.

Front Cover Mock Ups

I really really like this front cover. I think it looks very original and looks professional. Once again the picture used the lighting effectively. I also like the inclusion of the microphone. This may be something I take into my thought when I do my final pictures.

This was yet another mock up that I took a while making, editing, redoing etc. In the end, I ended up with this. I feel that it is good, as it's very basic, with minimal information/headlines on the cover, yet it still is informative and gives an insight into the magazine.

I intitially had the title as a very dark red. In the end I decided to change it to this colour - Blue. I feel that this particular picture and front page suits the blue colour, however I doubt i'll be using blue in my final front covers.

Contents Mock Ups

This was definately my favourite contents page. I feel that the image works well, especially the lighting, so effective lighting could definately be something i look to bring into my pictures.

In this contents page, i have given a brief insight into what each band/artist is saying, underneath the title. I think it works well and will incorporate this into my final piece I feel. I don't like the idea of the big picture at the bottom, so won't be using that.

I went for the simplistic approach to this page. However, I really don't like it, and I feel that it is lacking a lot of information and pictures. It's far too bare and I shall not be using this idea at all in my final contents page.

Caitlin Rose

I've recently been listening to a lot from an artist named Caitlin Rose. I feel that if my female audience would be into a female artist, this is the type of artist they'd love. I find her voice very strong and raw, and she's definately similiar to someone such as Laura Marling.

Here's one of her songs to have a listen to, off her debut EP 'Dead Flowers'

golden spiral

The golden spiral rules states that there should be something, leading the eye to the center of the composition. It could be a line or several subjects.  It is said to be essential to make a 'succesful' picture. Here's an example of Golden Spiral in a flower;

My Band Profile

My band will be aged 19-21 and will all be male. The band consist of just 3 members, a bass player, a drum player, and the lead guitarist also being the electic guitar player. They formed in mid 2009, after all meeting at their university in the outskirts of London. They began as most bands do, just at the very small venues, all local with free entrance. They then began to start to play slightly bigger venues, still fairly small, however they now were beginning to play at venues which required entrance fees. They began to be known within the music industry around the area for their tracks, with people describing them as 'bombay bicycle club, with a twist'.

As soon as they started to be more and more well known, they had a little interest with a record company. The company simply offered to just pay for there travel to various venues around the south of England, with people believing that they were just seeing if the boys from the outskirts of London could possibly be a hit outside of their own city. As it turned out, they were a big success nearly everywhere they went. They then were offered a record contract with Fiction Records. With people such as White Lies, Snow Patrol, The Maccabees, Filthy Dukes, Ian Brown and Crystal Castles already on this record contract they decided to absolutely jump at the chance and signed the deal just 2 weeks after they returned to London. Their dress sense is definately taking inspirations from people such as Yannis Philippakis, Orlando Weeks by following the 'indie/alternative' style of clothing.

They lead the lives of most young people, they enjoy going to partys with their friends, staying in around one of the other band member's house with a few cans. Whilst together they always like trying to write new music, & they also like listening to new music that they've heard. Their genre of music is 'indie/alternative' with the lead singer, having a distinct  voice. They have now all left university with all the hype that surrounds them as a band, and are 'really looking forward to releasing the album in early February and going on tour as the support act for the band White Lies'.

my pitch - Evaluation

Myself, Dan and Max all had to do our pitch today, due to us not being at college in last weeks lesson. Therefore, we were pretty unaware that we would be doing it today, so we were all fairly underprepared.
Despite this I felt that it went fairly well today. I hadn't fully encorporated all 25 of my words into my animoto, so I started my presentation off by showing and reading my words out to my audience. I then went on too show my animoto to the class and then I recieved questions.
I was asked a few questions from my audience and I think that I handled them all well. I was asked by what I ment when I said 'to the point' in my 25 words. I explained that by this I ment that for my double page spread I wanted the artist that would be being interviewed answer the questions straight to the point, and not go on about irrelevant things that the audience wouldn't really be interested in.
Overall I think that it went pretty well.

Magzine Publisher

After having a look around at the different magazine publishers, I have chosen IPC Media to be the publisher of my music magazine. I came to this conclusion, by looking around at which company publishes which magazine. Seen as my magazine will have a heavy similarity to the music magazine, NME, I believe it would be a good idea to team up with the same publisher as NME's. The hope with this is that it will be very similar to NME and have that feel and look about it, however I aim to slightly pip NME on the sales and hopefully my audience will go for my magazine when they see the two on the shelves. According to IPC Media themselves, they produce over 60 iconic media brands, with print alone reaching almost two thirds of UK women and 42% of UK men – almost 26 million UK adults – with their websites collectively reaching over 14 million users every month. 'The company is very successful and manages to sell over 350 million copies of their magazines each year.'
I'm hoping that with my magazine being published by a leading, well know & respected company that it will only further aid it's sale and it will immediately give the magazine a bit of publicity.
